Australian Art History

I read the great book 'Roy and Matilda' by Susan Venn which is based on the Australian art collection at the NGV. I read the book in stages and stopped at three artworks which we studied in more detail. They were as follows;
'The Shearing of the Rams' by Tom Roberts
'The Arbour' by Emmanuel Phillips Fox and
'Flowers and Fruit' by William Gould

The students were asked to respond to each work in their own way and we used a different medium for each artwork. For the first one they used pencil, the second they used watercolour paints and the third they used oil pastel. They learnt so much from this project such as the difference between portraits, landscape and still life pictures. They experimented with different mediums. They learnt about different subject matter and got to view times within Australia long since past. They really enjoyed this project. I think they enjoyed the still life classes the best.
