Masterpieces Prep style

This term the Preps have focused on famous artworks. They have learnt about different styles and techniques for creating art and have responded and made their own. They have explored different mediums and have had a great time! The artists and artwork they have explored are as follows;

'Starry Night' by Vincent Van Gogh

'Mona Lisa' by Leonardo Da Vinci

'The Scream' by Edvard Munch

'Composition II in red, yellow and blue' by Piet Mondrian

'On white II' by Kadinsky

I may be biased but my Preps this year have been absolutely incredible. The work they have produced has really inspired me and challenged my ideas of what younger children can create when allowed the freedom to explore on their own. I am so proud of them and can't wait to see what they come up with next year.

Mathematics and Art

This term I was challenged by the fact that the Level 3 focus for this term was Mathematics and I really wanted to introduce to the students how closely Mathematics and Art can be tied together. Over the term we looked at symmetry, patterns and tessellations. They really enjoyed the radial symmetry name activity which transformed their name into a complex beautiful pattern. They also enjoyed the challenge of tessellations. They discovered that once they got started they weren't as hard as they seemed.

Aboriginal art with Level 3

This term Level 3 students studied Aboriginal art from around Australia. We looked at the art of Maringka Baker, Jungala Kris as well as Craig Koomeeta. I was also very inspired by an activity found on Use Your Coloured Pencils found here looking at desert weavers and their amazing woven and wrapped sculptures. We are planning an exhibition of their favourite work from the term which they are very excited about.

I introduced the students to paintings from my private collection which inspired them to create their paintings. We focused on patterns and symbols for their paintings.

The art from the Tjanpi desert weavers inspired the following sculptures of Australian native animals.

The scultpures of Carig Koomeeta inspired the students to create clay animal sculptures focusing on form, traditional colours and patterns
