Christmas Around the World

Its a well know fact that I never do Christmas (or use glitter!) in my classes. I'm not a scrooge I just never seem to get around to it. It sneaks up on me and then it's too late. SO this year I decided to embrace Christmas wholeheartedly and look at Christmas traditions around the world for inspiration for our art making.

Level two students learnt about Saint Lucia in Netherlands and created a crown of Candles.
They also made Indian oil burning candles, learnt that the Christmas tree originated in Germany and the significance of the Poinsettia to Mexican Christmas traditions.

We also read many Christmas stories and got in the spirit very very early. It was a fun term. I learnt many things about Christmas I did no know and will try harder to incorporate Christmas into my classes in the years to come. The students LOVE Christmas so it will be hard not to.

Emotions in Art

Level 4 students explored how artists express emotion in art by using the arts elements in different ways. They learnt how to analyse an artwork and identify the expressive qualities.

From looking at the work of Joy Hester, Francis Bacon and Edvard Munch they each conducted an individual project where they were required to create three works of art (medium of their own choice) expressing three different emotional states.

My students constantly surprise me and I am always impressed by how much information they actually take in and then use in their art making. Their outcomes from this project were fantastic.

I will miss the Grade 6 students as they move on to their next stage of learning and go into High School. It has been a pleasure to teach them and I wish them the best of luck.

Masterpieces Prep style

This term the Preps have focused on famous artworks. They have learnt about different styles and techniques for creating art and have responded and made their own. They have explored different mediums and have had a great time! The artists and artwork they have explored are as follows;

'Starry Night' by Vincent Van Gogh

'Mona Lisa' by Leonardo Da Vinci

'The Scream' by Edvard Munch

'Composition II in red, yellow and blue' by Piet Mondrian

'On white II' by Kadinsky

I may be biased but my Preps this year have been absolutely incredible. The work they have produced has really inspired me and challenged my ideas of what younger children can create when allowed the freedom to explore on their own. I am so proud of them and can't wait to see what they come up with next year.
